Singer 239

I've got an old Singer 239 - maybe early 60es. It has a lot of feet and attachments that I have identified on http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/index/ - but there is one, which has a small circular hole for the needle and a sliding gauge thing with marks 1 to 8 on; this is agled at 45 degrees rather than going straight across. Sorry, I would have uploaded a photo, but this forum doesn't seem to allow this.

Hi, J; I think it's an adjustable hemmer. the numbers are in eights of an inch (1/8") to determine hem width. I tried mine yesterday for the first time. There will be the usual long learning curve for me on this one. There are some fantastic you tubes on it. 'singer 35931 adjustable hemmer' should find it. In fact the UK site you reference has an article about it under 'Singer Simanco 35931 Adjustable Hemmer'.
