Trouble reviving an old machine

Trouble reviving an old machine

Hello all! I've never been more than a casual sewer- used to make a few nightgowns and fun pillowcases for the kids when they were little. It's now been many years since I've done any sewing, but I'm getting the bug to try a few projects again.

I was given an old Singer Stylist 833 and just gave it a test run. The stitching was a mess. The fabric doesn't seem to be feeding through right. When I hand turn the machine, I see that the feed dogs are rotating only every 5th or 6th stitch. They seem to be doing their job, just not in time with the stitches.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Within reason I am willing to try making adjustments on my own. You Tube is great for DIY repairs if I know what to look for. Is it something I should even try, or would it be better to take it to a repair shop?

I'd be grateful for any advice. Hope to be sewing again soon!
