Sewing Machine Tips for Beginners

For anyone just learning to sew, here’s a list of simple things you can do to help prevent sewing machine problems:

 Use a new, sharp needle for every project or change your needle after eight hours of continuous sewing.

 Use the right needle for your type of fabric and thread. Generally, thicker needles for heavier fabrics and threads, thinner needles for finer fabrics and threads, and ballpoint needles for knit fabrics.

 Don’t over wind your bobbin with too much thread.

 Use a good quality, brand name thread.

 Don’t sew over pins.

 Don’t pull your fabric as you sew.

 Before you start to sew a seam, grasp the thread tails from the upper and bobbin threads. Hold them back and out of the way for your first couple of stitches. This will keep the threads from getting caught in your machine.

 Clean the lint from your machine (the bobbin area and under the throat plate) after every project.

You're right on the target with the tips for beginning, and all other sewers. In addition pay attention to the bobbin - make sure you're using the right bobbin for your machine, and make sure there isn't a nick anywhere along the edge of the bobbin - these two items can really mess up the stitching
