Hand Sewing Tips

Postby Sarah Doyle » Sun May 04, 2008 7:58 pm

I've been doing a lot of hand sewing lately, so I thought I would do a little "hand sewing" research and see what I could come up with, for my own information and to pass along to others. I did find a few interesting things: **When sewing by hand, use about a 20-inch length of thread to prevent tangling. It is not advisable to double the thread because it tangles easily. **When taking thread from the spool, let the spool roll freely in the other hand to prevent twisting the thread. **Insert the end of the thread cut from the spool into the needle eye and knot. Pull the first stitch inside a fold to conceal the knot. **Always cut the thread on a slant - never break the thread. And last, but not least **with each stitch in hand sewing the thread is twisted. Drop the needle occasionally to unwind the thread (I'd put this under the sewing category, but think it really belongs here)
