I'm in process of starting to sew again after a 30-year absence from it.
Regarding thread ... I've read in several places that it's important to buy GOOD thread or else the bobbin and threading mechanism can get jammed up and not work correctly. Can someone tell me the name of a good brand to buy? I've seen Coats & Clark and 2 or 3 other brands but don't know what is considered a "good" brand.

TIA

Rachel

Many thanks, Kate. Very comprehensive article. I was perusing your website a few days ago (missed the article on thread though) but did get some insightful info on books you recommend and ordered 7 of 'em!!! I ordered all on Amazon and read the reviews posted there on the books I ordered and all were very positive.

The thread thing is on LJ rather than the web site. It'll go up on the website when we finally get round to updating that...

Glad you found the booklist useful. What did you get?

Let's see .... I ordered:

Reader's Digest Complete Book of Sewing
Couture Sewing Techniques
Easy, Easier, Easiest Tailoring
The Stretch & Sew Guide to Sewing on Knits
Sewing with Sergers (I've never owned one)
Fitting Solutions: Pattern Altering Tips for Garments
Fabric Savvy

Got a machine today .. hopefully a good utility machine without all the bells/whistles since I don't embroider or do quilting. Just want something that allows me to make clothes for myself. Got a Husqvarna Emerald 116.
