Hi All!

My name is Ginger. I'm 35 years old and I live in Illinois. I came to this forum because I'm teaching myself to sew with a Sewing for Dummies book and the easiest patterns that I can find.

I have made enough bookbags to last a lifetime. Laughing

I am a fairly crafty person. I have loved doing counted cross stitch and hand embroidery since I was in my teens.

My biggest challenge has been conquering fear. I've always said that I CAN'T sew. I don't know where that got implanted into my brain. Maybe it was the sewing teachers at school that made me dislike it. It has been therapeutic for me, doing a thing that I've said I cannot do.

I've also found that learning this new skill has been working a few brain muscles. Specifically I realized that it takes spacial thinking; envisioning flat pieces coming together and forming something. (and then, sometimes, turning them inside out!) You have to be able to think that through. It's getting easier, I just think it's a part of my brain that I've not been required to use for a long time.

Thanks so much in advance for your advice and I look forward to chatting with all of you soon.

Being able to do three-dimentional visualization is really useful with garment and bag making. Fun too! Brain cells that work are happy brain cells! Laughing

Hi! Addykitty, If I can do it you can because I told myself the same thing. I couldn't sew except to mend something. Since then I've taught myself how to make quilts and I made my first costume for my 28 yr. old daughter last year for Centric beer fest last year. I just bought quilting books and did alot of reading. I also do cross stiching. I also make re-cyled tote bags.

That's awesome! It gives me hope! Laughing

What materials are you using to make the tote bags?
