| I am a fairly novice quilter (done 2 quilts before) and very novice sewer. In the past, I have always hand quilted. Due to some time constraints, I need to machine quilt my current project (a small baby quilt). I have an older (late 80s early 90s) Necchi Model 523. I tried to just "go at it" but am having trouble with the stitches being too tight because the material only feeds from the bottom and so it really isn't feeding through at all with the batting and backing. After consulting some online resources, I have discovered something called an Even Feed Foot. Can anyone tell me if this would solve my problem? If so, any resource to help me find out what kind to get (my sewing machine manual is MIA)? Any important tips for a first time machine quilter? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

I don't know anything about your sewing machine but I sew on an older singer for my quilting and yes it makes a big difference with the even foot. I really like it for quilting. |

I'm new to the forum, & I've been sewing for 30+years, I make clothes & quilts, I have 2 necchi sewing machine, the first one I had lasted for 20 years, I read your post maybe I can help, If it was my machine I would check the needle to see if it's bent-roll the needle on a flat surface to see if it rolls correctly
next if your sewing & the needle makes a popping sound when penetrating the fabric the needle is blunt
the thread may be caught on something-try rethreading the machine
places it can get caught on is-
1.spool pin
2.thread spool notch
3.thread can come off thread take up lever
check the bobbin area to see if there is any loose thread or lint-if you sew a lot clean this area at least once a week because some fabric has more lint than others
I don't know about the foot but I have learned any foot that makes the job easier is worth it
happy sewing
